This Sunday May 29: Aaron's Farewell

Friends, this Sunday May 29 we will be holding a farewell service for my time in youth ministry at St David's. If I have been short on words these past few weeks it's partly because of the many different hats I have been wearing of late ... it's also because there has been so many years to think about and process with regards to my time at SDUC ...

I hope to have some of those words this upcoming Sunday. Above all else, it has been a great privilege to serve you all.

There will also be an official vote to becoming an affirming congregation after worship, if you are wanting to cast your ballot or even still are interested in the outcome of that vote. Thanks so much! Oh, and then there's this afterwards

Fort McMurray Fire Response with the Calgary & Wood Buffalo Food Banks

Given the distance we live from the situation in Fort McMurray and region, it can be difficult to know how to help.

Here's a straightforward option - The Calgary Food Bank is partnering with Wood Buffalo Food Bank to ship urgently needed items to the locations where people are taking shelter, and it is anticipated that there will be continuous need in the weeks and months to come.

For ways you can donate, click here for the CFB's Fort Mac Fire Response Page. There you will find a list of urgently needed items and other ways to send support.

Thank you so much for your generous help during this difficult time.

YouthChurch Sunday May 8: Wrapping our theme, but keeping the conversation going

This Sunday we will be wrapping up this year's theme, Language of the Unheard with some follow up work from our guest speaker mini-series. This would be a time to bring any further questions you might have about Racism/Discrimination, and we can look at resources for further exploration. Youth Room, 10 AM.

This Sunday: Godly Play (Two left!)

We have two more Godly Play sessions before the end of the year. If you haven't seen one before, now would be the time!

From the Godly Play UK website:
"Through the regular, predictable shape of each Godly Play session, (participants) are implicitly introduced to the importance of and need to set aside and structure our time when we prepare to come close to God.

"This patterning of time allows not only for preparation and a period dwelling on being in the presence of God through Scripture, but also allows time for discerning a personal response to such experience as well as time set aside to journey on from this intimate experience back into ‘everyday’ life.

"The patterning of time helps the (participant) to recognize safe enough ways of risking the emotional investment to become deeply engaged and open to God and to themselves."

Ash Wednesday This Wednesday

This Morning's YouthChurch: Indigenous Characters in Hollywood

This morning we saw the first half of Reel Injun, a film about depictions of Aboriginal peoples in Hollywood. Above I have posted an interview with Jesse Wente (featured in Reel Injun) discussing the portrayal of Tonto in the most recent 2013 Lone Ranger film.

The non-historical costume worn by Tonto was based on a non-historical Native American painting by Kirby Sattler, seen here.

YouthChurch this Sunday: Continuing stories about Canada

Last Sunday we decided to roll with our conversation about what's "Normal", and this week we are going to continue that conversation in the context of the "Normal" stories we tell about Canada and being Canadian. There's a story we find in beer commercials and other "Canadian" moments, and then there's another story from a much deeper, older place. Youth Room, 10 AM.
